O atrakcji

Limassol Old Town is the historic core of the city, a roughly 1 km² area between the medieval castle, the seafront, and the Anexartisias shopping street. It has been heavily restored since the 1990s — peeled-back stone façades, replaced wooden balconies, repaved squares — and is now a mix of museums, traditional craft shops, restored taverns, and modern cafes built into 18th- and 19th-century stone shells. It is the part of Limassol most worth a day on foot.

The anchor monuments are the Limassol Castle (small medieval keep, now the Cyprus Medieval Museum, with a roof view across the old port), the carob warehouses (the long stone industrial buildings of the carob trade — the Carob Mill Museum is one of them, the others now restaurants), the Genethliou Mitella square with its restored façades, the Latin and Greek Orthodox cathedrals, and the Limassol Marina at the eastern edge. Several side streets — Ayiou Andreou, Saripolou, Genethliou — have stretches of restored merchant houses with traditional Cypriot wooden upper storeys.

The Saturday municipal market in the carob-warehouse district sells local food, olives, halloumi, sweets, and a remarkable spread of garden vegetables; it is one of the better markets on the island and the easy way to pick up gifts. Saripolou Square and Ayias Triados are the evening focal points — full of restaurants and bars from sunset onward.

Insider tips. Walking shoes; the cobbled lanes are uneven. Saripolou Square is the evening dinner answer (book at one of the popular restaurants in summer). The Carob Mill Museum tells the story of the carob trade that built Limassol — small but excellent. The municipal market on Saturday opens early (06:30) and is best by 09:00. Parking inside the old town is restricted; use the public lots on the marina side.

Combinations. Pair with the Limassol Marina (eastern edge, 5 minutes' walk), the long Molos coastal promenade westward, or as the start of a day trip to Kourion and Kolossi. The old town is its own half-day on foot.

Bring. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen for open squares, casual evening wear, a daypack for market shopping. When. Year-round. Saturday morning for the market; spring and autumn evenings for the restaurants; cooler months for unhurried walking. Limassol's old town is the city's quietly worked-on cultural project, and it deserves your slow afternoon.
