O atrakcji

Paphos Harbour is, structurally, what every Mediterranean harbour aspires to be: a small protected basin with stone breakwaters, fishing boats and tour catamarans tied up along the quay, fish tavernas with tables on the seafront, and a squat medieval castle anchoring the western mole. The setting has been the heart of the city since the 4th century BC when Nea Paphos was founded; the present visible structures span from the medieval to the modern.

The Paphos Castle at the harbour mouth was built in the 13th century by the Frankish Lusignans, captured and dismantled by the Genoese, rebuilt by the Venetians, then taken and rebuilt again by the Ottomans in 1592 — the form you see today. It is open as a small museum (modest entry fee) with a roof terrace giving the standard postcard view back across the harbour to Paphos. The harbour itself remains a working fishing port; small daily catches are landed in the early morning and the fish tavernas behind the quay buy direct.

What to do. Walk the breakwater for the panorama of the harbour and castle. Lunch at one of the harbour tavernas — Pelican is the long-running classic, with fish and seafood mezze. Take a glass-bottom boat or catamaran trip (1-2 hour cruises run by several operators, around 15-25 EUR per adult). Visit the castle (15-20 minutes inside, 10 minutes on the roof). The Paphos Archaeological Park entrance is a 5-minute walk from the harbour, making this the natural starting and ending point of any Paphos UNESCO day.

Insider tips. Sunset along the breakwater is the photo, year-round. The harbour tavernas vary — ask which is currently the best ('which one are locals eating in?' is a fair question to a passing waiter). For a serious fish meal at a fairer price, drive 10 minutes north to Kissonerga or Pegeia village. The boat trip touristy commentary is forgivable for the views of the coast and Paphos skyline from the sea.

Combinations. Paphos Harbour is the natural anchor of any Paphos day — combine with the Archaeological Park (mosaics) and the Tombs of the Kings, finishing here for evening light and dinner.

Bring. A hat for the open quay, modest dress if entering the castle (no specific code, just respectful), small change for the boat-trip touts. When. Year-round; sunset is consistently the best moment. Spring and autumn evenings are particularly fine. The harbour at dusk, with the castle lit and the boats rocking, is what most people picture when they picture Paphos.
