Caledonia Falls is the most accessible serious waterfall in Cyprus, a 13-metre cascade in a pine-and-plane forest gorge on the upper slopes of Mount Olympus, reached by a well-marked 3 km nature trail from near the Presidential Lodge above Pano Platres. The walk descends gently through the Caledonia Valley along the Kryos Potamos stream — fern, plane, pine, the air consistently cool and damp even in mid-summer when the coast is at 35°C — and ends at the falls themselves, where the stream drops over a polished granite face into a small natural pool.
The trail is part of the Troodos national park nature trail network, well graded, suitable for moderately fit walkers including older children. Walking time is around 60-75 minutes one way (3 km, mostly downhill from the upper trailhead at the Presidential Lodge end; or you can start at the lower Pano Platres end and walk up). There are wooden bridges, stone steps, and benches at intervals. Wildflowers in spring; mushrooms and damp moss in autumn; running water year-round.
What to do. Walk the trail. Photograph the falls (the morning light is best). Sit a while; in summer the temperature drop in the gorge is genuinely refreshing and the sound of water is the antidote to anything. The pool at the base is small and cold but technically swimmable on a hot day if you are willing.
Insider tips. Walking down from the Presidential Lodge end is easier; walking up from Pano Platres is the workout. Either way, you must walk back — there is no shuttle. Sturdy shoes are essential — the trail is uneven and in places slippery on damp stone. Avoid the day after heavy rain when the trail can be flooded. The lower trailhead at Pano Platres is signposted; parking is limited.
Combinations. Pair with Mount Olympus (the trail starts near the summit road), Trooditissa Monastery (15 minutes by car), Pano Platres village for lunch, or Pelendri (Tsiakkas Winery, painted church) for a longer Pitsilia day.
Bring. Sturdy shoes, 1L water, snack, layered clothing (the gorge is cool), sunscreen for the start, camera. When. May for spring water flow and wildflowers; September-October for clear cool walks; February for after-rain water flow at its strongest. Avoid summer midday only because of the climb back; mornings and evenings are perfect. Caledonia Falls is the easiest sustained Troodos walk and one of the most rewarding hours on the mountain.
