Makronisos sits at the western edge of Ayia Napa, three small adjoining beaches (locals count three pocket coves; the main one is around 500 metres) of fine pale sand and clear shallow water that stay turquoise far out. It is consistently Blue Flag, lifeguarded in season, with full bar and watersports concessions — and yet, because most party-Ayia-Napa traffic ends up at neighbouring Nissi, Makronisos stays markedly calmer and more family-oriented.
The unusual feature for a beach is the archaeology at the eastern rocky headland: a small group of Hellenistic-period rock-cut chamber tombs and a sanctuary, dating from around the 3rd century BC, are accessible by a short walk along the cliff path. They are unfenced and unstaffed — you can walk in among the cut shafts and look at the chambers, which are carved straight into the limestone above the sea. It is an unexpected pairing of family beach and ancient necropolis, peculiarly Cypriot.
What to do. Swim — the slope into the water is gentle for 30 metres before any drop, sand quality excellent, water exceptionally clear. Sunbed-and-umbrella around 8-10 EUR per pair, lifeguarded. Watersports concession covers banana boat, jet-ski, ringo, parasail. Walk the cliff to the tombs (15 minutes round-trip). Snorkelling at the rocky points is good for sand smelt, wrasse, occasional bream.
Insider tips. If Nissi is full, drive 3 minutes west to Makronisos — same water quality, half the noise. Children love the tombs; bring a small torch for inside the chambers. The southern corner of the main beach is the calmest. Parking is paid in season but adequate; the road in fills before the beach does.
Combinations. Pair with Nissi Beach and Aphrodite Waterpark for a full Ayia Napa day, or with the Cape Greco park for a beach-and-cliff combination, or with the Ayia Napa Sculpture Park (15 min east) for a quieter afternoon.
Bring. Sunscreen, snorkel kit, water shoes for the rocky points, a small torch for the tombs. When. June and September are ideal; July-August acceptable thanks to the lower noise; May and October for a near-empty beach with cool sea. Makronisos is the answer for travellers who want Ayia Napa's water without Ayia Napa's volume.
